Returns, Scams & Seller Protection - Practical UK Guide
Today we cover three things every UK eBay seller dreads but needs to understand: returns, buyer scams, and what eBay's seller protection actually covers.
📦 Handling Returns Like a Pro
eBay's Money Back Guarantee means buyers can always return - but how you handle it determines your defect rate. Best practice:
- Accept the return without arguing. Fighting it almost always escalates to a defect.
- Issue a partial refund only if the item was clearly misused (with photos as evidence).
- Report buyers who abuse the returns system - eBay does track patterns.
🚨 Common Buyer Scams (and How to Beat Them)
- "Item not received" on tracked parcels - always use tracked postage. Royal Mail 48 Tracked is cheapest. Screenshot the tracking on dispatch day.
- "Item not as described" on a used item - your photos are your defence. Photograph every angle, every flaw, before dispatch.
- Chargeback after delivery - eBay covers you if you have tracking proof showing delivery to the buyer's registered address.
🛡️ What Seller Protection Actually Covers
eBay's seller protection kicks in automatically when you:
- Ship to the address on the eBay order (not a different one the buyer messages you)
- Use trackable postage with online proof of delivery
- Keep all communication within eBay messages (not WhatsApp or email)
If all three are met, eBay will side with you on most "item not received" and "not as described" scam attempts.
